Scamander is a small coastal town in northeast Tasmania. It lies about 235km from the capital of Hobart and 184km from Launceston. It is part of the State District of Lyons and uses the postcode 7215. The population was just over 500 as of 2006.

Scamander is nestled between the towns of St Marys and St Helens, both approximately 18km away. Besides the two, Scamander is a fairly remote palce; the next closest towns are Fingal, Derby, and Bicheno.
Name derivation and history
Scamander and the river next to it were discovered in 1825 by explorer John Helder Wedge. He originally named the town Yarmouth after his hometown, and the river was named Borthwick. When the town was officially established, both were renamed Scamander after the Greek river god. read more

Scamander is located at the mouth of the Scamander River and faces the Southern Ocean to the east. Its coastline is smooth and firm, making it an ideal venue for beaches and recreational facilities.

The concrete bridge crossing the river is one of the town's main attractions. The product of many failed constructions, the bridge is fairly new and offers a sweeping view of the river, as well as the peaceful beach nearby. Inland, the Winifred Curtis Reserve boasts an attractive display of wildflowers and the region's diverse flora.

The Tasman Highway is the main route to Scamander, connecting it to major towns like Launceston and St Helens. The nearest airport is in Launceston, serving regular flights from Hobart, Launceston, and major cities in Tasmania and the mainland.
